Serigne Abdourahamne Kounta takes advantage of his interview with Sunuy Mag TV to address the controversial and long-standing debate about whether or not Gammu is Bid’a (Innovation in religion). Even though he admits that Gammu is Bid’a, he cautions against the fact that detractors of Gammu are pseudo intellectuals who have a narrow understanding of the concept of Bid’a. Elaborating on the topic, he distinguishes two types of Bid’a. Positive and permissible Bid’a on the one hand, negative and reprehensible Bid’a on the other. According to him Gammu belongs to the former type of Bid’a, for, it is based on the concensus of the majority of the Umma, which is after the Holy Quran and the prophetic tradition, a reliable jurisprudential source.
