This web site is the result of collaborations spanning a decade and involving many persons and several institutions. The following words serve as a modest appreciation. I thank Khalif El Hadj Mame Bou Mamadou Kounta, his son Professor Mouhamed Kounta, and other members of the Kounta family in Ndiassane and in Ndankh who consented to this project and agreed to be interviewed. My thanks are also due to the dedicated members of the Bou Kounta Qadiriyya community, and others involved with the community, for sharing their knowledge.

El Hadj Cheikh Bécaye Coulibaly and his family not only welcomed me warmly as they had done in the past but offered to host me during my June 2015 stay in Ndiassane. Idrissa Coulibaly’s home provided a particularly congenial environment where I was able to enjoy the company of Malian adherents who had stayed on in Ndiassane after the annual ziara.

Mr. Daouda Faye, teacher at the Ndiassane collège, was my close collaborator for the interviews in 2015. I greatly benefited from his competence in conducting the interviews, his collegiality, and the respect he had earned in the community. The interviews were translated or transcribed by Mr. Gana Ndiaye, currently a doctoral student at Boston University, who has been unfailing in his support for the project. Mr. Hady Sow, teacher at the CEM Fadilou Diop in Pikine, conducted the interview with Cheikh Bécaye Coulibaly and provided logistical support.

Pre-2015 interviews in this collection were carried out by Mrs. Toba Diagne Haîdara, a teacher at the Lycée Lamine Gueye in Dakar with a vast knowledge on the topics under discussion. I owe their translations / transcriptions to the diligent work of Drs. Adrien Pouille, Dr. Moussa Thiao, and Mr. Gana Ndiaye.

Finally, I would like to express my appreciation to Ms. Catherine Foley and the entire MATRIX team at Michigan State University whose work and technical skills made this web site possible. Last, but not least, my thanks go to Professor David Robinson who developed the idea for this and the related collections, and to the National Endowment for the Humanities for funding their realization.
