Biography: Imam Alhaji Rabiu Abubakr grew up near Salaga, an important trading town north of Kumasi, where his father and grandfather were Imams. He has been a tailor in Kumasi Central Market for more than thirty years. His religious training is far above average, so his fellow tailors chose him to lead their daily prayers in the market, as an informal Imam. He is most comfortable talking in his first language, Hausa, about religious matters (which he does in this interview), but tells his own story in fluent Twi (see other interview ).
