South African Police

Responsible for internal security, the South African Police (SAP), in its relentless drive to repress anti-apartheid organizations, became synonymous with fear and violence. More specifically, members of the Security Branch perpetrated atrocities and gross human rights violations that were revealed during the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) process. Following the dismantling of apartheid, the SAP was renamed the South African Police Service.
