Biography: Al-Hajj Usman Nuhu Sharabutu is the National Chief Imam of Ghana. Educated in Quranic knowledge in Kumase in the 1940s, he returns to Accra where he established the Ansari-al-Din Quranic School. He was among the few educators to introduce the English language for students at the religious school. He later became the chief Imam of the Accra Central Mosque and later the National Chief Imam. Al-Hajj Sharabutu belongs to the Tijaniyya sect and had some training in Senegal.
Description: The interview seeks a description of the functions of the National Chief Imam in a country where every administration region has its own chief Imam. Also in this interview, the Imam provides responses that will answer critics who question his commitment to secular education. Has the Islamic community leadership over whom Al-Hajj Sharabututhe is chief Imam become traditionalized?
