This web site would not have been possible without the cooperation and assistance of many individuals. First and foremost, we owe thanks to members of the Kunta family, especially Khalif El Haj Mame Bou Mamadou Kounta, and to the many devoted followers of Shaykh Bou Kounta who graciously received us and agreed to be interviewed. At the beginning of this project, Professor Mouhammed Kounta provided us with contacts and arranged for us to meet his father, the Khalif. Makhtar Ndiaga Koné, former President of the Qadiri Youth Movement, has gone out of his way to assist us throughout.

Dr. Adrien Pouille translated most of the interviews while he was a doctoral student in Comparative Literature at Indiana University. Mr. Moussa Thiao, Mr. Gana Ndiaye, Mr. Mamadou Samake, and Mr. Boubacar Diakate also translated or transcribed some of the interviews.

The West African Research Center in Dakar provided various forms of support. We thank in particular its Director, Professor Ousmane Sène, Administrative Director Abdoulaye Niang, and archivists Abdourahmane Sène and Papa Amadou Sall Kane.

Finally, we would like to express our appreciation to the entire MATRIX team, most especially to Ms. Catherine Foley, and to Professor David Robinson who invited us to participate in this project and allowed us to use his historical maps and images.

REMERCIEMENTS
